Born in Jakarta to a distinguished, successful and affluent family, Hashim went to Europe for his initial education, before attending Pomona College at Claremont University where he studied Political Science and Economics.

Gradually in the early 1990’s he progressed in his career in the finance and business world, setting up PT Tirta Mas, and investing in both Bank Kredit Asia and Bank Niaga. When the Asian financial crisis hit, Hashim went to London for nine years, consolidating his businesses and actually increasing and enlarging his interests and portfolio.

He returned to Indonesia to rescue his brother Prabowo’s company Kiani Kertas, and still owns it to this day. He then moved into land acquisition, eventually gaining 3 million acres with resources that included coal mines, oil and gas fields, forestry and plantations.

He is as well known for his philanthropic ventures as much as his business ones, and has been very active in setting up foundations to help both the economies of Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries as well as the wildlife in the region.
