Garibaldi Thohir Biography
Garibaldi’s father Teddy was one of the co-founders (along with William Soeryadjaya, father of Edwin Soeryadjaya) of Astra International Group. After studying in the United States at Northrop University earning an MBA, he worked for Astra before setting up a property development company. That was unsuccessful, and in 1992 he joined PT Allied Indo Coal in West Sumatra. Undeterred by his first venture into business, he set up PT WOM Finance, a company that predominantly organized public financing for Honda motorcycles.
Then in 2005 along with Benny Soebianto, Theodore Permadi Rachmat, Sandiaga Uno and Edwin Soeryadjaya, Garibaldi bought Adaro Energy. Together they turned the ailing business around making it the second largest coal producer in Indonesia, and the fifth biggest on the planet.
Away from coal, he is still involved with Honda, distributing their bikes, has a stake in the Indonesian Telecom company Hutchinson 3 Indonesia and along with other members of his family runs a collection of hotels and restaurants.
